By Matt Miller, PhD – Managing Director of the UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars
Another exciting healthcare milestone in the Twin Cities! Today marks the official start to the third UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars. This mentorship-driven accelerator focuses on digital health innovation with the support of executives and subject matter experts from UnitedHealthcare alongside the worldwide network of Techstars.
Last year’s class set an incredibly high bar. Here are some highlights from our 2020 alumni:
“AI Can Now Detect Depression From Your Voice, And It’s Twice As Accurate As Human Practitioners” - Forbes
“This startup is training doctors to deliver better care for people of color” – Fast Company
“Former Uber Data Scientist Grows Digestive Health Startup” – Startup Savant
“Mass. Health Systems Launch mHealth Programs to Support Preventive Health” – mHealth Intelligence
The ripple effects of COVID-19 continue to impact our health system. Fortunately, the past 18 months have also included positive changes that are accelerating healthcare innovations. In fact, it’s fair to say the broader US health system has never been more receptive to novel technical solutions than it is today. The venture capital community has unsurprisingly doubled down on this theme, with H1 of 2021 surpassing the entire amount invested throughout 2020. Startups now have the perfect storm of market forces to expedite business growth while affecting real change.
After the success of our programs in 2019 and 2020, we are thrilled to be entering our third accelerator with 10 technology startups dedicated to making the health system work better for everyone. This year’s applicant pool was quite strong, with companies from 36 countries applying to accelerate their efforts toward improving access to care, quality of care, cost of care, gaps in care, and the experience of care. The 2021 class also represents our ongoing commitment to investing in diverse and underrepresented entrepreneurs. Of the 10 companies, six are led by women CEOs, seven have co-founders who identify as ethnically or racially diverse, and one company is led by a sister/brother team! We are proud of these world-class founders and excited to see the many great things they will accomplish. Huge thank you to UnitedHealthcare, mentors, and the alumni who make the UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars possible. Please join me in welcoming the class of 2021!
