Walking and Cycling Super-STARS at the Houses of Parliament

The 2018 National STARS Schools of the Year have been announced by Andrew Selous MP, Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling Group, at a special school’s awards event which took place at the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday 24th April.

Modeshift STARS, which is supported by the Department for Transport, is the national school travel awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable travel for the journey to and from school. 69 local authorities across the country participate in the scheme representing around 15,000 schools.

The nine STARS Schools of the Region came together at the Houses of Parliament to celebrate their achievements and find out which of them would earn the coveted title of National STARS School of the Year for 2018.

The 2018 National STARS Schools of the Year are as follows:

- National STARS Primary School of the Year Barnabas Oley Church of England Primary School, Cambridgeshire
- National STARS Secondary School of the Year Turves Green Boys’ School, Birmingham
- National STARS SEND School of the Year Holbrook School for Autism, Derbyshire.
- National STARS Early Years Establishment of the Year Footsteps Day Nursery, Portslade.

Overseeing proceedings was Ross Butcher, National Chair of Modeshift. He said ‘Every year it is an honour to hear about the new and creative ways that schools come up with to engage their school community in the promotion of sustainable travel. Over 3,200 schools nationally have signed up to Modeshift STARS so each of our STARS Schools of the Region has proven to be at the forefront of our collective effort to encourage more young people and their families to adopt healthy and sustainable forms of travel. Together, they are helping us to make a real difference on how people are undertaking the journey to school.’
