Founded by Kobby Amoah and Charles Kunene, Mountain Health provides affordable and convenient healthcare to self-employed individuals and small businesses, ensuring that everyone has coverage irrespective of income or zip code. The company completed the UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars in 2019, and recently raised a $1.5 million funding round.

Healthcare is expensive and full of surprises – but it does not need to be. In fact, it should not be. Income inequality in the U.S. has grown over the past several decades, and as the gap between rich and poor only widens, so does the gap in their health. It is this inequality in health outcomes that drives Dallas resident Kobby Amoah, Cofounder and CEO of Mountain Health.

“Health disparities in the United States are very profound,” Kobby said. “Most individuals do not have access or cannot afford essential healthcare services like preventative screenings. I started this company to ensure that everyone has access to affordable healthcare irrespective of income or zip code.”

Healthcare for All, At Just $30 Per Month

Mountain Health provides health and wellness services for a fixed monthly subscription of $30. Members of the health startup enjoy 24/7 access to doctors, nutrition services, urgent care visits, birth control, and more. For example, Mountain membership grants access to premium wellness services like meditation through Headspace and an AI nutritionist.

Ensuring that self-employed individuals and small businesses could access convenient and affordable healthcare is the driving force behind the company, Kobby said.

“Our service is important because the majority of Americans work for small businesses or are self-employed. Most small businesses or self-employed individuals cannot afford costly health insurance plans - that's where Mountain comes in,” he said.

Mountain Health continues to grow with a number of recent milestones. A partnership with CVS allows Mountain members to access healthcare services at all CVS MinuteClinic locations across the country, while new tests allow for members to check for STDs from the comfort of their homes.

Perhaps most importantly, the startup is also helping in the fight against COVID-19. A new service addition offers unlimited access to nurses who can help with coronavirus screening and even arrange for members to be tested.

Building A Network of Providers, Faster, with UnitedHealthcare

Mountain Health took part in the Techstars UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Class 2019, a decision which Kobby said made a big difference to his company’s development. 

Mountain Health just raised $1.5 million in a funding round led by Matchstick Ventures — a venture capital firm founded by two Techstars Managing Directors — and with participation from both Techstars Ventures and Northwestern Mutual Future Fund.

“An accelerator program like Techstars was what we needed to jumpstart our business,” he said. “Techstars helped us understand and answer the fundamental questions facing our business. The MD and mentors helped us identify our initial customer target and made important introductions that help us launch our business.”

Importantly, the startup received vital support from accelerator partner UnitedHealthcare.

“UnitedHealthcare helped us build a network of providers across the country in three to five months. It would have taken us about five years to do what we did without UHC,” Kobby said.

The healthcare solution will soon be available in five major cities — Dallas, Minneapolis, New York, Chicago, and LA — with other major service additions like at-home birth control delivery on the horizon.
